Fault map of the North Aegean Sea and its surroundings based on the data presented and referenced in Figures 3, 4, 5, and 6; arrows for strike slip, teeth for reverse/thrust slip, and bars for normal slip. Faults in NE-SW, ENEWSW, and E-W orientations are dominantly right-lateral strike-slip with both normal and reverse slip components. Faults in NW-SE orientation are primarily normal faults with occasional left-lateral component. The color code of faults is as follows: blue for inactive faults (faults not affecting the sea bottom or appeared as strongly eroded on land), red for active faults (faults offsetting the sea bottom, related with submarine landslides or historic earthquakes), and green for faults inferred from bathymetry only. Inset shows the historic seismicity over the last 25 centuries (data from Papazachos and Papazachou [1997]).
